Day Trip to Assisi + Wine Tasting

  • 296 reviews | 3,187 travellers
Goodnight! The guide's presentation of the city of Assis (Mari) was very good and the wine tasting (Cantina Tili) was also excellent. The problem was that the driver arrived an hour earlier than agreed at the hotel. So we lost the hotel coffee, which was already paid for. I had requested confirmation of the place and time the day before, which was confirmed.

Tour Description

After picking you up from your hotel in Rome at the scheduled time, we’ll leave the capital behind and head north toward the Umbria region. Ready to explore one of Italy’s most famous pilgrimage destinations?

When we arrive in Assisi, we’ll take a guided tour to uncover all the secrets of Saint Francis’s hometown. We’ll start with a half-hour visit to the Basilica of Saint Francis, which houses the saint’s tomb, frescoes from the 12th to 14th centuries, and masterpieces by artists such as Cimabue, Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini.

Next, we’ll make our way to Piazza del Comune, where we’ll admire the exterior of the Palazzo dei Priori, the People’s Capitol Palace, the Civic Tower, and the Temple of Minerva, the best-preserved Roman building in the region. We’ll continue the tour with a visit to the Basilica of Saint Clare, home to the saint’s relics, and end at the Sanctuary of the Renunciation, where the Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first patron of the internet, is buried.

During the excursion, we’ll also stop for a one-hour guided visit to a traditional Umbrian winery, where you’ll enjoy a tasting of local products. We’ll savor a regional wine paired with bruschetta topped with extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, and a variety of cured meats.

Before returning to Rome, we’ll make a brief 20-minute stop at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built to protect the Porziuncola, the small chapel that hosted the first Franciscan community, and the Chapel of the Transit, where Saint Francis passed away in 1226.

The tour will end at Piazza della Repubblica, in the heart of Rome, about 12 hours after pickup.

Pickup Details

Pickup is included for hotels in Rome located within the Aurelian Walls. If you’re staying outside this area, or in an apartment or B&B, please go directly to Piazza della Repubblica at 7:30 am, in front of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

Wine Tasting

Please note that depending on availability, the wine tasting may take place in a traditional restaurant instead of a winery. In that case, you’ll still enjoy a regional wine paired with local products.
